Charlottes Web - Post Three

In Charlottes Web I think that Fern fits the archetype of the loss of innocence. In the beginning of the book she is smart, but still very childish. She takes care of Wilbur and stays with him all the time. She's attached to him and seems like she would never let him go. Once he is moved to the farm down the road there is a physical separation between them. Fern goes to the barn often, but still isn't as close to Wilbur as she had been. She does have some sort of connection to the animals though. She can hear them talk even though she doesn't talk back. Then Fern stops going to the barn as often. Once she is at the fair she doesn't stay with Wilbur she goes off with Henry on the ferris wheel. Over the course of the book Fern grows up. Her interests shift from animals to boys. The book is about about Wilbur and his life, but also it's a story of Fern growing up. You could also say that Wilbur fits the archetype of loss of innocence as well. He starts off as a new born pig and in the end he turns out taking care of baby spiders. He grows and mature over losing a friend and death. He has to forget his childish ways and grow up in a very short period of time. For Fern it seems more of a choice. In the end of the book I find that Wilbur and Fern have both grown into more mature strong people.
